MORE THAN EQUAL
I would like to spak to you on the subject of queer exceptionalism.
So often as queers we concentrate on equality, on being on par with the rest of the culture, when secretly we know we're superior.
So often we want a seat at the table while we're treated like the floor show. Indeed we bring so much to the table, we should be guests of honour.
So often the LGBTIQ community focusses on the notion of 'pride', but it is not an appreciation of our exceptional nature, but merely a rejection of shame, and I think we can do better and expect much more.
Never let it be said
We are only equal
We deserve better than best
We’re a powerful people
We can rival the rest
And always surpass them
And always outlast them
We can survive any test
We will always aim higher
And aspire to triumph
Never let be said
We are only equal
We’re both brilliant and blessed
We’re a powerful people
I don’t want your rights
I demand your reparations
I don’t want your promises
I just don’t have the patience
I don’t want acceptance
I expect your adulation
I don’t need applause
When you owe me an ovation
I don’t want your welcome
When I should have your worship
I don’t want respect
Until you know how much I’m worth it
I don’t need your attitude
I damn well don’t deserve it
I don’t want your platitudes
When I’m altogether perfect
C’mon, C’mon
We are more than equal
C’mon, C’mon
We are more than equal
Never let it be said
We are only equal
We deserve better than best
We’re a powerful people
We can rival the rest
And always surpass them
And always outlast them
We can survive any test
We will always aim higher
And aspire to triumph
Never let be said
We are only equal
We’re both brilliant and blessed
We’re a powerful people
C’mon, C’mon
We are more than equal
